Portrait of Naúl Ojeda by Emily Light Rose

Naúl Ojeda 1939-2002

Artist Naúl Ojeda, a dear friend of the Institute, died on Thursday, June 6, after a long illness. He is one of the true heroes of Latin America and in our struggle for justice for Orlando Letelier and Ronni Karpen Moffitt. He will be badly missed. His remarkable work will live on in our publications, our posters, and our website.

"The compelling woodblock prints of Naúl Ojeda have graced the posters, invitations, and program booklets of the Letelier-Moffitt Human Rights Awards since its earliest days. His haunted, but hopeful, images have come to summarize the spirit of the awards for many of us associated with the event. But few know that Naúl, who was born in Uruguay, was a press photographer and Allende supporter in Chile in the early 1970s." From Light Among Shadows: A Celebration of Orlando Letelier, Ronni Karpen Moffitt, and Heroes of the Human Rights Movement, IPS, 2001, which is illustrated with .Naúl's prints.

Naul Ojeda extended great warmth, love and care to children and youth, and the family requests that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be made in the form of contributions to Identity, a non-profit organization that provides education, healthcare, and empowerment for Latino youth: Identity, 1734 14th Street, NW, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC, 20009.
