Whereas,
The City of Somerville is a city of immigrants who all to well
know the terrible cost of war; and
Whereas,
We know the cost of war can never be measured; and
Whereas,
We understand that every conceivable alternative to war must be
sought before resorting to such measures; and
Whereas,
We recognize the importance of protecting the quality of life for
all people and the necessity of creating a world free of potential nuclear
conflict; and
Whereas,
We encourage a regional solution that addresses all of the arms
proliferation and control issues in the region, not just the single
issue
of a regime change; and
Whereas,
We urge the United States Government Executive and Legislative
Branches to work towards a cooperative solution with the United Nations
and
other nations in the pursuit of a foreign policy that eliminates the
possible threat of nuclear war; NOW THEREFORE BE IT
Resolved,
That the Somerville Board of Aldermen does hereby oppose a
unilateral invasion of Iraq and urges our government and our allies
to seek
diplomatic cooperation in maintaining world peace and successfully
addressing the threat of nuclear conflict; AND BE IT FURTHER
Resolved,
That our Federal Delegation and the President of the United
States be informed of this Resolution.
