April 10, 2003 Resolution


RESOLVED: That this Board of Aldermen respectfully requests that the U.S. Congress restore the $25 million recently cut from the Veterans' Service budget, and asks that the City Clerk communicate this resolution to the State Delegation, and to the appropriate Congressional committees.

Board of Aldermen Resolution Against the War Somerville, Massachusetts
(Passed prior to outbreak of war)

Whereas, The City of Somerville is a city of immigrants who all to well
know the terrible cost of war; and

Whereas, We know the cost of war can never be measured; and

Whereas, We understand that every conceivable alternative to war must be
sought before resorting to such measures; and

Whereas, We recognize the importance of protecting the quality of life for
all people and the necessity of creating a world free of potential nuclear
conflict; and

Whereas, We encourage a regional solution that addresses all of the arms
proliferation and control issues in the region, not just the single issue
of a regime change; and

Whereas, We urge the United States Government Executive and Legislative
Branches to work towards a cooperative solution with the United Nations and
other nations in the pursuit of a foreign policy that eliminates the
possible threat of nuclear war; NOW THEREFORE BE IT

Resolved, That the Somerville Board of Aldermen does hereby oppose a
unilateral invasion of Iraq and urges our government and our allies to seek
diplomatic cooperation in maintaining world peace and successfully
addressing the threat of nuclear conflict; AND BE IT FURTHER

Resolved, That our Federal Delegation and the President of the United
States be informed of this Resolution.
